    IRENA’s Global Renewables Outlook: Energy Transformation 2050

    “Global Renewables Outlook: Energy Transformation 2050”, formerly known as “Global Energy Transformation: a roadmap to 2050”, was published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in April 2020. This comprehensive analysis outlines the investments and technologies needed to decarbonize the energy system in line with the Paris Agreement. It also explores deeper decarbonization options for the hardest sectors, aiming to eventually cut CO2 emissions to zero.

    World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report 2020

    The Global Risk Report 2020 published by the World Economic Forum indicate that the top five global risks in terms of likelihood are all environmental including extreme weather events (floods, storms etc.), failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation, human-made environmental damage and disasters (oil spills, radioactive contamination etc.), major natural disasters (earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption, geomagnetic storms etc.), and major biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse. The report also emphasized the need for integrated solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges, policymakers to balance economic growth with the protection of the earth, and the private sector to refer to scientific knowledge to avoid catastrophic losses in the future.

    UN Environment Program Emissions Gap Report 2019

    The UN Environment Program (UNEP) Emissions Gap Report for 2019 warns that the global greenhouse gas emissions must fall by 7.6 per cent each year between 2020 and 2030 so that the world will remain on track towards the 1.5°C temperature target under the Paris Agreement and control the impact of climate change.

    The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released the Greenhouse Gas Bulletin on the State of Greenhouse Gases in the Atmosphere Based on Global Observations through 2018, showing that the global average concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) in the atmosphere are 147%, 259% and 123% of pre-industrial levels, respectively.

    The FAO State of Food and Agriculture 2019 focuses on food loss and food waste

    The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released the 2019 edition of the State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA 2019). SOFA is a major publication of the FAO which aims to provide the general public with a well-balanced and scientific assessment of important issues in the field of food and agriculture. This new edition addresses the issue of food loss and food waste, providing new estimates as Food Loss Index (FLI) and Food Waste Index (FWI), a comprehensive analysis of the critical loss points in the global food supply chain, and appropriate measures that can be undertaken by policy makers for effective reduction.

    The 2019 Revision of World Population Prospects has been released by the United Nations Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat providing projections of population growth, demographic estimates, and associated population indicators such as number of births per woman, aging population, proportion of active workers etc. The population is expected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030 (10% increase), 9.7 billion in 2050 (26%), and 10.9 billion in 2100 (42%) from 7.7 million in 2019.

    According to the 2018 Revision of World Urbanization Prospects, the proportion of the world's population that is urban, which is 55% today, is projected to increase to 68% by 2050, with 90% of the additional 2.5 billion people concentrated in Asia and Africa. In the context of the global urbanization trend, sustainable development will depend on responding adequately to urban expansion in low-income and lower-middle-income countries, which are projected to urbanize most rapidly by 2050. Improving the livelihoods of both rural and urban populations will require balanced policies while strengthening urban-rural, economic, social and environmental linkages.
