Low-Carbon Agricultural Technologies and Pathways for Climate-Responsive Innovation【Low-Carbon Agriculture】
2026-10-08
Background
Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of droughts, floods, heat stress, and other extreme events, destabilizing agricultural production and threatening food security. In ASEAN countries, where agriculture is a major industry and smallholder farmers play a central role, there is an urgent need to develop resilient agricultural systems while reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector. International initiatives such as the ASEAN Strategy for Carbon Neutrality and the ASEAN-Japan MIDORI Cooperation Plan identify decarbonization and resilience enhancement in agriculture as priority areas. Building on technologies developed by JIRCAS for reducing emissions from rice paddies and livestock systems and increasing soil carbon sequestration, this project seeks to accelerate their implementation and dissemination throughout the region.
Objectives
The project develops climate-resilient, low-carbon technologies for rice cultivation, upland cropping, and livestock production. It also analyzes social and economic barriers to technology adoption and provides policy recommendations to facilitate implementation.
Research Themes
- Development of low-carbon technologies for rice production
- Development of low-carbon technologies for upland cropping systems
- Development of low-carbon technologies for livestock production
- Promotion of implementation through economic assessments and related analyses
Target Countries
Cambodia, the Philippines, Viet Nam, Thailand, Lao PDR, Indonesia, etc.
Target Beneficiaries
