The Philippines (/ˈfɪlᵻpiːnz/; Filipino: Pilipinas [ˌpɪlɪˈpinɐs]), officially the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is a sovereign island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. It consists of about 7,641 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions from north to south: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city of the Philippines is Manila and the most populous city is Quezon City, both part of Metro Manila. Bounded by the South China Sea on the west, the Philippine Sea on the east and the Celebes Sea on the southwest, the Philippines shares maritime border with Taiwan to the north, Palau to the east and Malaysia and Indonesia to the south.(Source: DBpedia)

Video on Environmental Conservation and Efforts to Prevent Red Soil Runoff in Okinawa Now Available

An international meeting to share knowledge on how to balance agricultural production and environmental conservation in tropical islands was held a year ago with participants from the Okinawa Prefectural Government, Ishigaki City Government, and the Department of Agriculture, Republic of the Philippines. A video presented at the meeting featuring efforts to protect the beautiful nature and precious blessings of the land and sea in Okinawa has been released with English subtitles.

Proceedings of the JIRCAS-SEAFDEC/AQD Joint Workshop on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) Research

JIRCAS, in collaboration with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) in the Philippines, conducted a 10-year research project on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) from 2011, to promote sustainable and equitable production of marine products in the Asian monsoon region. We have now published the proceedings of the workshop held in August 2019.

    553. World Oceans Day

    June 8 is World Oceans Day. It was established to create an opportunity to raise global awareness of the challenges facing the international community regarding the oceans. Also, 2022 is the  International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture. In today's Pick Up, we introduce two examples of international joint research related to small-scale fisheries and aquaculture in the field of fisheries featured in the JIRCAS Research Highlights.
