273. JIRCAS Online Open House
JIRCAS is organizing an online Open House during the Science and Technology Week from April 12 (Mon) to 18 (Sun), 2021, to introduce and disseminate its various research activities to the general public.
The Science and Technology Week was established in February 1960 for the purpose of promoting science and technology in Japan. It is held from Monday to Sunday on the week that also includes April 12 which is “Invention Day”. During this week, various events and activities are organized by science and natural history museums, universities, research institutes etc. all over the country.
In order for Japan to develop as a truly prosperous nation and contribute to world peace and prosperity, it is important to realize a society based on the foundations of science and technology. Recently, it has been pointed out that the youth who will lead the next generation, are becoming less interested in science and moving away from science and technology. It is therefore important to deepen the understanding and enhance opportunities for the general public to increase familiarity with science and technology.
All activities this year will be organized online as a precaution to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. A special site for the open house has been set up for on demand streaming of mini-lectures to be presented by research staff, aerial videos featuring agriculture and the environment in Africa, and other fun activities that can be enjoyed by adults and children alike.
Furthermore, special mini-lectures on the food system and transboundary insect pests will be streamed live on April 17th (Sat) from 14:00 ~ 15:00 JST. Advance registration is required but for those want to watch only can enjoy the mini-lectures on YouTube and there is no need to register. We hope to take this opportunity to further deepen the relationship between JIRCAS and the general public, to disseminate how various research initiatives benefit the people, and to broaden the understanding of international agriculture, forestry and fisheries research.
