Background

Climate change is increasingly affecting crop production in developing regions such as the Asian monsoon region through extreme weather events including high temperatures, droughts, and heavy rainfall. At the same time, environmental impacts associated with excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides are becoming more evident. There is an urgent need to evaluate and disseminate crop production technologies that simultaneously support climate change adaptation and mitigation while reducing external inputs. Integrating breeding materials with crop management practices for major crops such as rice and soybean and quantitatively assessing greenhouse gas emissions, fertilizer use, and pesticide use are essential for developing technology packages tailored to local agricultural conditions. Collaboration with national and international research organizations is needed to accelerate the implementation of environmentally harmonized crop production technologies.

Objectives

The project develops core technology packages for environmentally harmonized crop production in the Asian monsoon region, including Indonesia, by integrating breeding materials and crop management technologies that contribute to climate change adaptation, mitigation, and reductions in fertilizer and pesticide use. The packages incorporate greenhouse gas assessments, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based regional deployment models, and implementation strategies.

Research Themes

  • Evaluation and dissemination of fertilizer-reduction and heat-adaptation technologies for rice
  • Evaluation and dissemination of environmentally harmonized technologies for soybean, amaranth, and tomato
  • Demonstration and strategic deployment of environmentally harmonized technologies at the regional level

Target Countries

Indonesia, Bangladesh, Paraguay, the Asian monsoon region, and the Global South

Target Beneficiaries

Farmers, research institutions, extension organizations, seed distribution organizations, international organizations such as CGIAR and ASEAN, and local and national government agencies
