JIRCAS participates in “High Level Policy Dialogue on Investment in Agricultural Research for Sustainable Development in the Asia-Pacific Region"

The Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI) is a regional association of agricultural research institutes whose mission is “to promote the development of national agricultural research systems (NARS) in the Asia-Pacific region through inter-regional and inter-institutional cooperation.” JIRCAS is one of APAARI’s founding members and has been an active participant in meetings and activities since its establishment in 1990.

Methodology in JIRCAS’s Research Highlights 2012 report, “Soil suitability map for teak plantation in the Northeast of Thailand,” extended to four other provinces by the Thai Royal Forest Department (RFD)

JIRCAS carried out a joint research project with the Thai Royal Forest Department (RFD), and the results were summarized in JIRCAS’s “Research Highlights 2012” report titled “Soil suitability map for teak plantation in the Northeast of Thailand.” One of the outputs of this JIRCAS-RFD project was the publication of a map for Udon Thani and Nong Bua Lam Phu Provinces (Figure 1a) in Northeast Thailand, the project’s study area.

Cowpea germplasm database focusing on grain quality-related traits is now ready for access

The “EDITS-Cowpea” project is one of JIRCAS initiatives that have been implemented to generate fundamental scientific information to promote better utilization of the wide genetic diversity of this crop in breeding programs and crop utilization. Based on the information generated through the project, we have created the "EDITS-Cowpea database" (http://www.jircas.go.jp/en/database/edits-cowpea/introduction).

Debrief Meeting on the Collaborative Research for Sugarcane Improvement between JIRCAS-KKFCRC, Thailand

JIRCAS has been implementing the collaborative research project on sugarcane improvement entitled “Development of new type of sugarcane with better performance under adverse agricultural environments by using wild relatives (EDITS-Cane Project)” with Khon Kaen Field Crops Research Center (KKFCRC), Department of Agriculture (DOA), Thailand since 2011. This project aimed at developing efficient breeding techniques to utilize wild germplasm and sugarcane breeding materials through inter-specific and inter-generic hybridizations.

The 2014 U.S.-Japan Council (USJC)-American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) Women in Business Summit was held at the ANA InterContinental Hotel in Tokyo on May 27, 2014. Dr. Marcy Wilder of the JIRCAS Fisheries Division attended the Summit as a speaker. The Summit aimed to bring together Japan’s many diverse women’s organizations that are working toward the goals of better conditions for and representation of women in the working environment in Japan, and featured a full program of speakers, panel discussions, workshops and networking opportunities throughout the day.

Dr. Bas Bouman, GRiSP Director, visits JIRCAS headquarters in Tsukuba

On 9 December 2013, Dr. Bas Bouman, Director of the Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP), visited JIRCAS headquarters in Tsukuba. On the same day, JIRCAS hosted an international seminar, titled "Situation of GRiSP and implication to Japan," where Dr. Bouman gave a lecture. Rice researchers from JIRCAS and other related institutes joined the seminar and discussed the activities of GRiSP.

JIRCAS International Symposium 2013 New Direction of Sustainable Technology Development in Asia: Changing Rural Livelihood and Japanese Advantage

Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) held International Symposium 2013 at the U Thant Hall, United Nations University, Tokyo, Japan on November 20-21, 2013. "New Direction of Sustainable Technology Development in Asia: Changing Rural Livelihood and Japanese Advantage" was the theme of the symposium this year.

The 2013 Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers

On November 20, 2013, the commendation ceremony of the 2013 Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers was held at the U Thant International Conference Hall, United Nations University, Tokyo, Japan.The ceremony was well attended by many participants, including members of the selection committee.

JIRCAS International Workshop: Carbon sequestration in soils through farm land management - The latest world researches and relevancy in Southeast Asia - was co-organized by JIRCAS, Department of Agriculture (DOA) and Land Development Department (LDD), Thailand on 6 December 2012 at Bangkok, Thailand. 55 participants mostly from Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam discussed the relevancy of carbon sequestration in farm land of Southeast Asia.

JIRCAS International Symposium 2012 Resilient Food Production Systems: The Role of Agricultural Technology Development in Developing Regions

The 2012 JIRCAS International Symposium was held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center (Epochal), Tsukuba City, Japan on November 28-29 with the theme, “Resilient Food Production Systems: The Role of Agricultural Technology Development in Developing Regions.” It was attended by 152 guests and participants, and was organized by JIRCAS under the auspices of the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Council (AFFRC) Secretariat of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations - Japan Office, and Japan Forum on International Agricultural Research for Sustainable Development (J-FARD).
