The 3rd International Workshop on Sustainable Management of Sugarcane White Leaf Disease Held in Thailand
From March 3 to 4, 2026, the 3rd International Workshop on Sustainable Management of Sugarcane White Leaf Disease was held at Khon Kaen University in Khon Kaen, Thailand.
This workshop was organized based on the contents of the “Healthy Seedcane Propagation and Distribution Manual Against Sugarcane White Leaf Disease,” which was jointly developed by JIRCAS, Khon Kaen University, and the Department of Agriculture of Thailand, and published in 2021 by the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board under Thailand’s Ministry of Industry.

JIRCAS Showcases Latest Biomass Research at Biomass Expo
At the Biomass Expo / 11th [International] Biomass Exhibition, held as part of “Smart Energy Week” at Tokyo Big Sight from March 17 (Tue) to 19 (Thu), 2026, the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) introduced its “Next-Generation Biomass Upcycling Technology,” which enables the advanced utilization of unused biomass resources.
JIRCAS Forestry Division Researchers Tanaka and Katsuura Receive Awards from the Japanese Forestry Society
On March 16, 2026, the award ceremony for the Japanese Forestry Society was held during the 137th Annual Meeting of the Society at the Tsukuba International Congress Center.
At the ceremony, Dr. TANAKA Kenzo, Senior Researcher in the Forestry Division of JIRCAS, received the Society Award, while Dr. KATSUURA Hiiragi, Researcher in the same division, received the Young Scientist Encouragement Award.
Future Science Talent Academy – Session 28: Lecture on Fermented Food Research at Nagoya Municipal Hisakata Junior High School
On Thursday, March 19, 2026, as part of the Future Science Talent Academy, JIRCAS held its 28th session as an outreach lecture at Nagoya Municipal Hisakata Junior High School. The school organizes career talk sessions aimed at helping students learn the value of work, understand how to engage with others, and consider their future career paths. This lecture was conducted as part of that program. Students selected sessions based on their interests from six fields—food research, medical technology, beauty technology, illustration, automobile dealerships, and professional sports—and a total of 109 first-year students participated.
Future Science Talent Academy – 27th Session: First-Year Students from Touougakkan Junior & Senior High School Learn About International Agricultural Research Through Llamas
On Thursday, March 19, 2026, twenty first-year students from Touougakkan Junior & Senior High School visited JIRCAS to take part in the 27th session of the "Future Science Talent Academy." The school is designated as a Super Science High School (SSH) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and conducts experiential learning through the “Tsukuba Science Tour,” where students experience cutting-edge scientific research. Their visit to JIRCAS was part of this program, giving them an opportunity to learn about global agricultural research and the work of international scientists.
Senior Researcher DAN Haruyuki Receives the President’s Award from the Japanese Society for Tropical Agriculture
On March 16, 2026, at the 139th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Tropical Agriculture (JSTA) held at the University of Tsukuba, Dr. DAN Haruyuki, Senior Researcher in the Rural Development Division, received the JSTA President’s Award and delivered a commemorative lecture.
“JIRCAS Research Archive” Launched: Tracing 50 Years of Progress Through History and Records
On March 17, 2026, the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) launched the JIRCAS Research Archive. Developed as part of the "Showa 100" initiatives, this archive systematically organizes reports on field surveys and research collaborations conducted worldwide by overseas researchers from the Tropical Agriculture Research Center (TARC) and JIRCAS. It also includes photographic records documenting activities from that era.
Delegation from Italy’s CREA and ISMEA Visits JIRCAS
On March 10, 2026, Prof. Andrea Rocchi, President of the Council for Agricultural Research and Economics (CREA), and Mr. Sergio Marchi, Director General of the Institute of Services for the Agricultural and Food Market (ISMEA), visited JIRCAS and exchanged views with President KOYAMA Osamu and other executives.

Senior Researcher Subbarao and Colleagues Appear on the Crop Science Society Podcast “Field, Lab, Earth” to Introduce Their Research on Sorgoleone and BNI
In February 2026, an episode titled “Sorgoleone with Drs. Sakiko Okumoto, Bill Rooney, and Guntur Subbarao” was released on Field, Lab, Earth, a podcast distributed by three major U.S. crop science societies — the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America.
TERRA Africa Project FY2025 Holds Activity Report Meeting – Towards “Technology Establishment for Regional-adapted Regenerative Agriculture in Africa”
From February 17 to 18, 2026, the “TERRA Africa Project FY2025 Activity Report Meeting” was held at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, Northern Ghana. A total of 54 participants attended, including researchers from JIRCAS, UDS, and the Savannah Agricultural Research Institute (SARI), as well as representatives from the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) and The Nippon Foundation.
International Workshop on Environmentally Adaptive Forestry Held at Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia
On February 9–10, 2026, an international workshop titled “Environmentally Adaptive Forestry Techniques for Southeast Asian Tree Species” was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The workshop summarized the achievements of the medium- and long-term plan under the grant-funded project “Environmentally Adaptive Forestry.” Launched in fiscal year 2021, this project aims to develop technologies for the restoration of forest resources in tropical forests degraded by overharvesting and to establish methods for selecting tree species and varieties with enhanced environmental adaptability.
Attendance at the Executive Committee Meeting of the Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI)
On January 28, 2026, Dr. ABE Hisashi, Director of the Forestry Division at JIRCAS, attended the 30th Executive Committee Meeting of the Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI) held in Coimbatore, India. The meeting took place as part of a session within the International Conference on Population and Conservation Genetics 2026.
JIRCAS Participates in the Food Tech Public-Private Council FY2025 3rd General Meeting/Proposal and Reporting Session
On Thursday, February 26, the Food Tech Public-Private Council’s FY2025 3rd General Meeting / Proposal and Reporting Session, hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, was held at Tokyo Innovation Base STAGE (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). From JIRCAS, Dr. MARUI Junichiro, Senior Researcher in the Biological Resources and Post-harvest Division, took the stage to deliver a presentation titled "Taking Japanese Koji to the World." He introduced international joint research currently being conducted with Japanese companies and researchers from Thailand and Laos to deploy food production technologies that utilize Japanese koji to create safe, highly nutritious food products overseas.
