2019 JIRCAS Report
The Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) is now accepting applications for fixed-term employment of young researchers.
Two second-year students from Shiba Junior High School (Minato-ku, Tokyo) interested in learning about research activities addressing Africa’s food problems visited JIRCAS on February 14, 2020.
A group of 14 second-year students from the Department of International Development Studies, College of Bioresource Sciences, Nihon University visited JIRCAS on February 13, 2020 as part of the spring training to broaden their understanding of international research on agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and to help them determine the themes of seminars for the next academic year.
The year 2020 marks the 50th year since JIRCAS was first established as the Tropical Agriculture Research Center in June 1970. As part of the celebration of this milestone, a commemorative logo has been created to be used throughout 2020.
The Deputy Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Dr. Daniel Gustafson, visited JIRCAS on January 23, 2020 and held discussions with JIRCAS President Dr. IWANAGA Masa on a wide range of topics including common areas of concern to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as global food and nutrition security and addressing climate change.
Ambassador Carlos Pere of the Republic of Panama visited JIRCAS on January 14, 2020. President Iwanaga and Ambassador Pele exchanged views on partnerships in technological cooperation and potential for improving research capacity.
JIRCAS President Dr. IWANAGA Masa attended the 9th annual Council Meeting of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) held in Denpasar, Indonesia on October 6-7, 2019.
A delegation from the Faculty of Economics, Srinakharinwirot University, Thailand, including Dr. Suwimon Hengpatana (Assistant Dean), Dr. Hiroyuki Konuma (Visiting Professor), Dr. Nantarat Tangvitoontham (Assistant Professor) and graduate school students, visited JIRCAS on November 28, 2019.
The SATREPS project “Breakthrough in nutrient use efficiency for rice by genetic improvement and fertility sensing techniques in Africa (FY VARY Project)” organized a workshop, which also served as the mid-term evaluation of the project, at the Hotel Colbert in Antananarivo, Madagascar on December 12, 2019.
A group of first-year high school students from Kumamoto Prefectural Uto Junior and Senior High School visited JIRCAS on December 12, 2019 as part of the Super Science High School training program on experience of the future (Kanto area training).
A group of 29 students from Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka in the Graduate School of Agriculture, Ibaraki University visited JIRCAS on December 4, 2019 as part of the Regional Sustainability Course.
JIRCAS Participates in the International Workshop on Facilitating International Research Collaboration on Transboundary Plant Pests
As the current MACS-G20 Chair, JIRCAS Pres. Masa Iwanaga participated as Chair of the "International Workshop on Facilitating International Research Collaboration on Transboundary Plant Pests” organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) at the Tsukuba International Congress Center on November 27-29, 2019.
The awarding ceremony for the 2019 Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers, also known as the “Japan Award” was held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center in Tsukuba, Ibaraki on November 26, 2019. The recipients of the Japan Award 2019 included researchers from Colombia, Vietnam and India.
JIRCAS International Symposium 2019 Focuses on Tackling Transboundary Plant Pests and Contributing to SDGs
From the perspective of contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the JIRCAS International Symposium 2019 focusing on international research collaboration to tackle transboundary plant pests was held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center on November 26, 2019.
A delegation of executive officers from Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) including Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh (Directorate of Water Resources) and Mr. Nguyen Hong Khanh (Water Management Bureau) visited JIRCAS on November 27, 2019.
