21st Century Hope Prize at the Fifth Niigata International Food Award
Dr. Kotaro Maeno, a researcher in the Crop, Livestock and Environment Division, was among those chosen to receive the Fifth Niigata International Food Award, winning in the 21st Century Hope Prize category.
2018 Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers
On November 6, 2018, the commendation ceremony of the 2018 Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers was held at the U Thant International Conference Hall, United Nations University (UNU), Tokyo, Japan.
JIRCAS at the University of Tsukuba “Soho Festival”
The University of Tsukuba held the annual “Soho Festival” on November 3-4, 2018 and JIRCAS participated with poster panels introducing various research activities on pest control, Asian biomass, utilization of agricultural and mountain village resources.
Best Presentation Award for Young Researchers at the 2018 ISSCT Workshops in Okinawa
Dr. Yoshifumi Terajima of the Tropical Agriculture Research Front was given the Best Presentation Award for Young Researchers at the conclusion of the 2018 International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists (ISSCT) Joint 12th Germplasm & Breeding and 9th Molecular Biology Workshops in Okinawa.
JIRCAS signs Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with iEES Paris
On 26 October 2018, JIRCAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing collaborative research with the French Institute of Ecology and Environmental Sciences - Paris (iEES Paris).
The 3rd International BNI Meeting in Tsukuba
The 3rd International BNI Meeting, organized by JIRCAS, was held on October 25 (Thu) and 26 (Fri), 2018 at Tsukuba International Congress Center (Epochal). This conference was the third biannual meeting held by the International Consortium on BNI (Biological Nitrification Inhibition) research, where several CGIAR institutes collaborate and participate in developing BNI research with JIRCAS.
Bilateral Meetings with the Agriculture Ministers of Madagascar and Senegal
JIRCAS President, Dr. Masa Iwanaga met with Dr. Harison Edmond Randriarimanana, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock of the Republic of Madagascar, and Dr. Papa Abdoulaye Seck, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Equipment of Senegal at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting held in Tokyo on October 6-7, 2018.

Visit of Minister Randriarimanana of Madagascar to JIRCAS
The Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Madagascar, Mr. Harison Edmond Randriarimanana visited JIRCAS on October 4, 2018 in conjunction with his stay in Japan for the 7th plenary meeting of the Coalition for African Rice Development (CARD) and high level ministerial talks.
