From November 13 to 15, 2025, JIRCAS participated in various events at COP30 (held in Belém, Brazil) and introduced its research and collaborative activities. The key points are outlined below.
November 13-Presentation at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa)
On November 13, at the AgriZone set up within the premises of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), following a recorded greeting by Mr. SAKAIDA Teruya, Director-General of the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Council Secretariat, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Dr. TANI Naoki, Senior Researcher from the Forestry Division, and Professor Dr. Widiyatno of Gadjah Mada University (recorded) presented initiatives in agroforestry aimed at balancing food production and forest conservation, highlighting the latest outcomes of international collaborative research, particularly focusing on teak.
November 14 – Presentation and Discussion at the ASEAN Pavilion
At the ASEAN Pavilion, Ms. DaDa from the ASEAN Climate Resilience Network (CNR) delivered a keynote address on the current state of food systems in ASEAN. Then, Dr. FUNAKI Yasuro, Project Leader of Green Asia, introduced an overview of activities under the “Green Asia” initiative. Subsequently, Dr. KOBAYASHI Shintaro, Senior Researcher in the Social Sciences Division, reported on factors influencing the adoption of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) technology in Bangladesh. Dr. Leon Ai, also a Senior Researcher in the Social Sciences Division, presented the results of a cost-effectiveness analysis of AWD implementation in Vietnam using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Furthermore, Dr. YOSHIHASHI Tadashi, Project Leader of BNI System, shared research activities on Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI) crops, including maize, while Dr. Tani and Professor Widiyatno (via recorded presentation) introduced studies on mitigation strategies through forest management technologies. The session concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Ms. DaDa, focusing on approaches to advancing research collaboration with ASEAN member countries.
November 14 – Panel Participation at the Food & Agriculture Pavilion
On the same day, a session was held at the Food & Agriculture Pavilion under the theme “Cross-sectoral Collaboration on Climate Finance and Technology to Scale Up Mitigation and Adaptation in Agriculture and Food Systems.” Dr. Funaki participated as a panelist. During the session, various organizations shared examples of utilizing climate finance and technologies. In his remarks, Dr. Funaki presented recent research findings on technologies such as AWD and BNI, based on the “GHG Reduction Technology Deployment Package for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries” (commonly known as MIDORI∞INFINITY). The discussion also addressed the roles of governments, research institutions, international organizations, financial institutions, and the private sector in promoting these efforts.
November 15 – Presentation of International Collaborative Research Outcomes at the Japan Pavilion
On November 15, at the Japan Pavilion, Dr. Funaki, together with Economist Chhiddikur (Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, via recorded presentation), Dr. Kobayashi, Dr. Leon, Dr. Yoshihashi, and Dr. Mishra from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research / Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), (along with two other recorded participants) presented the results of international collaborative research on key technologies for global deployment in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors, such as AWD and BNI.
At COP30, JIRCAS delivered presentations at multiple official events, sharing research outcomes and initiatives aimed at the international deployment of climate change mitigation and adaptation technologies, in collaboration with research institutions and international organizations from various countries.
