The annual global food loss in food supply chain is estimated 1.3 billion tonnes, which accounts for about one-third of world food production or is equivalent to 50 percent of vegetable and fruit production and 12 ~ 37 percent of rice production in Asia and the Pacific region, according to the FAO data, . Such loss mainly occurs in the process from post-harvest to market (food loss) and during the period of sale and consumption (food waste ).

To call on public attention to food losses and food waste in the region and promote sustainable food consumption, FAO launched a one-year campaign, named “The Save Food Asia-Pacific”. As the commencement of the campaign, “High-Level Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on Food Losses and Food Waste in Asia and the Pacific Region” was held on August 27~28, 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand with collaboration of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). It aims to understand current states of food loss and food waste, analyze the causes and discuss solutions. More than 130 delegates from 20 countries, including four Agricultural Ministers (India, Maldives, Nepal and Thailand), and international agencies (ASEAN, UNEP and WHO, etc.) attended the Consultation. During the Consultation, country reports and approach cases of efforts to reduce food loss and food waste were presented, and group discussion on raising awareness, strategic action, and network establishment were made. JIRCAS has introduced its research network for utilization of regional food resources. The Consultation closed with the Joint Communique on “the fight against food loss and food waste concerns everyone – everyone can contribute”.
