The 6th Africa Agriculture Science Week


The 6th Africa Agriculture Science Week was convened from July 15-19, 2013 in Accra, Ghana. The theme of this year is “Africa Feeding Africa through Agricultural Science and Innovation”. Total 1,334 delegates from various countries, including the special guest of honor, H.E John Dramani Mahama, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, attended the science week event. Every three years, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, collaborated with the government of host country, organizes a continental gathering. The gathering brought together all stakeholders who are involved in African agricultural research and development, such as international organizations, governments, NGOs and farmers. JIRCAS Africa Liaison set up a booth at the marketplace, exhibited the JIRCAS’ researches currently conducted in Ghana, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso and Nigeria. At the same time, the Liaison prepared materials which included the JIRCAS Outlines and JIRCAS News Letter, and introduced JIRCAS to interest visitors. 202 people visited the booth. The?participants not only expressed high concern on the research program to enhance rice production in Ghana and their implementation desires in neighbor countries, but also asked various questions related agricultural conservation of corn and soybean. Dr. Kanayo F. Nwanze, President of IFAD delivered the key note address. He said: to address the challenges of world, it is essential to continue to push the frontiers of science, knowledge and experimentation, while ensuring not to deplete the land and the resources. In Africa, small farmers, fisher and pastoralists feed more than 2 billion people. Therefore, we must recognize the importance to look at new and creative ways to make technologies and development accessible and affordable to them. During the last day’s business meeting, the 7th African Agricultural Science Week and General Assembly was ratified to be held in July 2016, Republic of Rwanda, and the 6th Africa Agriculture Science Week successfully ended.
