Overview:
In December 2022, the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the “Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.” This international framework, building on the achievements and lessons learned from the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, as well as the experiences and outcomes of other relevant multilateral environmental agreements, and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, sets out an ambitious plan to implement a wide range of actions to transform the relationship between biodiversity and our societies by 2030 and achieve the 2050 vision of living in harmony with nature.
Two new assessment reports, the “Nexus Assessment” and the “Transformative Change Assessment,” have been published by the IPBES*, which summarize scientific knowledge that is important for solving issues related to biodiversity, other environmental issues, and sustainable development in an integrated manner, as well as the transformative change necessary to achieve this shared vision. Four experts involved in the preparation of these assessment reports will introduce the latest research related to the reports and discuss how to implement the solutions outlined in the reports in our society.
*IPBES is an intergovernmental science-policy platform on biodiversity and ecosystem services established to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services for the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components and services, and the achievement of long-term well-being for human societies and sustainable development.
