As the host country of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Government of Japan will host the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit on December 7-8, 2021 to promote international efforts to solve malnutrition. (Overseas participants will be able to participate virtually.)

In conjunction with this summit, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will hold a side event focusing on one of the N4G target areas, “Food: Building food systems that promote healthy diets and nutrition,” in order to contribute to sustainable development in Japanese agriculture and food industries.

JIRCAS researchers, Dr. NAGATOSHI Yukari (Biological Resources and Post-harvest Division) and Dr. SHIRATORI Sakiko (Information and Public Relations Office), will give presentations in the following sessions.

Thematic Session 2: Toward Sustainable Solutions to Nutrition Issues through Food – Food is Local, Wisdom is Global

Purpose: There are no one-size-fits-all solutions to the diverse challenges faced by countries around the world, including developing and emerging countries. On the other hand, the world is not blessed with enough resources (people, goods, and money) to tackle each issue individually. In order to realize the most effective local production for local consumption through global wisdom sharing, we need to change the world through "innovative partnership" with the active participation of non-traditional actors who have been involved in food and nutrition. In order to realize "nutrition for all" in a sustainable manner, the perspective of "nutrition by all" is indispensable. Dr. Nagatoshi will introduce the partnership through agriculture, using quinoa as an example.
