June 1st is “World Milk Day”. The theme for 2021 is the sustainability of the dairy industry from the environmental, nutritional and socio-economic perspectives.

Milk has become an important daily food in people's diet as a source of high-quality protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Milk also plays an important role in a healthy life by improving immunity and preventing disease infection. In developing countries, the demand for milk and dairy products is increasing due to population and economic growth.

Livestock farming, including dairy cows, is important for small-scale agricultural systems in developing countries, but stable milk production is not possible due to the shortage of good quality feed during the dry season. JIRCAS is working on the development of an effective feed production technology that can be applied under highly constrained conditions, such as in rural Mozambique, and has developed a manual for preparation of silage and fermented TMR (total mixed ration) to help local researchers and farmers understand and utilize agricultural by-product resources as livestock feed.
