Background

Water and soil are fundamental resources for agricultural production, and their proper management is essential for both productivity and sustainability. However, increasing water insecurity caused by droughts and floods, together with soil salinization resulting from inadequate irrigation and drainage practices, has become a serious challenge in many irrigated agricultural regions. In salinity-affected areas of India and Central Asia, salt accumulation has long constrained agricultural productivity, while limited irrigation infrastructure and management systems reduce water-use efficiency in Tanzania. Resilient water and land management strategies that integrate irrigation, drainage, and soil rehabilitation are needed to improve water productivity while reducing salinization.

Objectives

This project develops resilient water and land management technologies that improve water productivity and reduce soil salinization in irrigated agricultural regions increasingly affected by droughts and floods. It also proposes measures to strengthen local organizations responsible for the long-term operation and maintenance of these technologies.

Research Themes

  • Development of resilient water and land management technologies in salt-affected regions
  • Development of sustainable water management technologies for African rice-growing areas

Target Countries

India, Uzbekistan, and Tanzania

Target Beneficiaries

Local organizations responsible for water and land management, agricultural policymakers, agricultural researchers, extension officers, farmers, and related development projects

Project Leader

ONISHI Junya (Rural Development Division)
