■ New Technology and Research Results from JIRCAS
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Three research results from the previous research program (Environment and Natural Resource Management) are introduced here.

● Monitoring saline intrusion in the Ayeyarwady Delta, Myanmar, using satellite data
Saline intrusion is a problem in the deltas of large rivers, which are major agricultural production areas in Southeast Asia.
Although salinity cannot be estimated directly from satellite imagery, seasonal changes in salinity and saline intrusion can be estimated indirectly through the strong relationship between the electrical conductivity and turbidity of river water.

● Silage preparation improves feed utilization of sorghum and pearl millet stover
In the semi-arid region of West Africa, sorghum and pearl millet stover are the main source of roughage for ruminants, but their nutrient content decreases when left untreated after harvest.
Processing of crop stover into silage will ferment them to good quality and improve their feed utilization, which is expected to alleviate feed shortages during the dry season.

● Brachiaria reduces nitrification rate through inhibition of ammonia-oxidizing archaea in inter-plant soil
The nitrification inhibition effect of Brachiaria pastures was observed in inter-plant soils and confirmed to be caused by the suppression of ammonia-oxidizing archaea.
The inhibition effect in inter-plant soils varies among cultivars and is influenced by biological nitrification inhibitory activity in root tissues in addition to rhizosphere secretions.
