From October 31 to November 1, 2025, the 64th "Harvest Festival" was held at the 4th floor Exhibition Hall A of Sunshine City World Import Mart Building in Toshima Ward, Tokyo. The annual special exhibition, organized by the Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries Technology Council Secretariat, the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), and the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS), showcased "Research and Development to Address Climate Change" as its theme.
At the event, JIRCAS presented research findings related to quinoa, a superfood known for its strong salt tolerance and high nutritional value. At the booth, visitors were introduced to physical specimens of quinoa and related products. In addition, there were demonstrations, such as the microscope observation of bladder cells (sac-like cells found in the epidermis of halophytes) from quinoa seedlings, and tastings of quinoa tea, allowing visitors to engage with the research in a tangible way.
Visitors shared feedback such as "I regularly eat quinoa" and "I am interested in the research," reflecting the growing public interest in quinoa. The exhibition served as an opportunity to broadly introduce the research outcomes of JIRCAS and raise awareness of the importance of crops that can be produced sustainably in diverse environments. It also contributed to promoting understanding of efforts aimed at securing future food sources.
