On August 2 (Wed) and 3 (Thu), 2023, the JIRCAS event entitled “Discovering the Wonders of Superfood Quinoa” was held at the exhibition corner of Tsukuba Business-Academia Cooperation Support Center.
As part of Children’s Tour Day during the summer vacation, the event featured panel exhibitions, displays of quinoa plants and seeds, quinoa products, and related books. JIRCAS researchers introduced the ecology of quinoa and their ongoing research in Bolivia, South America. Visitors listened attentively to the presentations, touched quinoa plants, observed salt bladder cells on the leaf surface under a microscope, and even tried on ethnic costumes. Many questions were asked and it became a valuable opportunity for meaningful exchange of ideas with the general public, which had been limited during the COVID-19 pandemic. We would like to thank all those who attended the event.
We hope that this event was able to convey the appeal of quinoa, also known as a superfood, to everyone, even if just a little. We at JIRCAS will continue to work on research and development of quinoa breeding and production technology.
