The 3rd Africa Rice Congress, co-organized by the Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) and collaborated with the Government of Cameroon, was convened on October 21~24, 2013 in Yaounde, Cameroon, with the theme “Rice Science for Food Security through Smallholder and Agri-business Development in Africa”. The congress set five mini symposia, three plenary sessions, and field trips. The next day, October 25, after the closure of congress, the 2013 global forum of Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP) was held. Many organizations such as IRRI, AfricaRice, and JIRCAS involved in the forum. Setting up a booth to exhibit research achievements in rice sector in Africa, and introducing research outcomes by one oral presentation or two posters, JIRCAS actively participated in this congress. During the field trip, the JIRCAS participants visited the experiment site implemented by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project “Upland Rice Development of the Tropical Forest Zone in Cameroon". In addition, the scientists from various countries communicated and shared their opinions on promoting Africa’s rice during global forum. More than 650 participants from 60 countries came together in this congress. Many conducive recommendations for stakeholders have been included in congress declaration based on the discussion results. At present, JIRCAS Africa researches are mainly conducted in West Africa, but through this congress, we have learnt many cases of rice science in Central Africa. With the common issues in Africa rice, it is possible that we can take advantage of JIRCAS research results into Central Africa countries, such as Cameroon. The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is an international research organization committing to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa through research such as variety development and extension in the rice sector.
