The 4th One Planet Summit was held on January 11, 2021 with discussions focusing on 4 themes to accelerate international action for the protection of biodiversity and reports on 9 initiatives under these themes.

The four key themes of the 2021 Summit are: (1) Protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, (2) Promotion of agroecology, (3) Finance for biodiversity, and (4) Protecting forests, species and human health.

The initiatives under these themes are: (1) High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, (2) Coalition for an Exemplary Mediterranean, (3) Legacy Landscape Fund, (4) Great Green Wall Accelerator, (5) Natural Capital Investment Alliance, (6) Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure, (7)  Land Degradation Neutrality Fund, (8) PREZODE initiative (PREventing ZOonotic Diseases Emergence), and  (9) Alliance for the conservation of tropical forests and rainforests.

The One Planet Summit is a platform for the international community and 2030 Action Agenda that tackles climate change challenges and supports the objectives of the Paris Agreement. The summit has been organized by the French Government since 2017.

The Japanese government has also issued a statement aiming to be carbon-neutral with virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and to build a vibrant community that emphasizes the natural resources of the region.

JIRCAS introduces the latest information on global issues that Japan and the international community should tackle, especially strategic trends in science and technology in the fields of agriculture, forestry and fisheries. Zoonotic diseases are caused by environmental destruction and biodiversity loss associated with anthropogenic economic activities, and if the current situation continues, new infectious diseases are expected to occur more frequently. The term “one planet” reflects the need for the international community to work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment, including the Paris Agreement.
