The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) published the "Cost of a Plate of Food 2020" report this month. The report, formerly known as "Counting the beans," has been renamed and is now in its third edition.

The Cost of a Plate report showed that among the top 20 countries where the cost of a single meal is high based on the daily income, 17 countries are in the Sub-Saharan Africa. This has been attributed to high dependency on food imports and on informal labor in these countries.

Using farming households in Madagascar and Burkina Faso as examples, JIRCAS conducts surveys and empirical analysis of dietary patterns and nutritional supply in rural areas from food consumption. We will explore more effective agricultural and nutritional intervention methods, paying attention to the relationship between agricultural production and diet, and consumer preference and behavior. We aim to contribute to the world's food and nutrition security by utilizing the analysis results in the strategic direction of agriculture, forestry and fisheries research.

The JIRCAS International Symposium 2020, scheduled online on November 10 (Tuesday), will discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the global food system and agricultural research agendas in the post-corona era. Please join us.
