1251. April 2025 Was the Second Warmest April on Record

According to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, April 2025 was the second warmest April on record globally, with an average surface temperature of 14.96°C, which is 0.60°C higher than the April average from 1991 to 2020 and 1.51°C higher than the estimated average from 1850 to 1900, which was used to define pre-industrial levels. Additionally, the 12 months from May 2024 to April 2025 were 1.58°C higher than pre-industrial levels.

Carbon Brief, a UK-based provider of climate change information, analyzed records from five different research groups and found that the first three months of 2025 were the second-warmest first quarter on record, despite a weak La Niña event (which usually results in lower temperatures). However, Carbon Brief noted that while there is a large degree of uncertainty, it is currently unlikely that temperatures in 2025 will break the annual record, although 2025 is almost certainly expected to be in the top three warmest years.
