1096. Climate and SDG synergies
Given the fact that more than 80% of the SDGs are climate-related, there is no room for a disjointed response to climate change and the achievement of the SDGs. Here we present one of the themes of this month's Fifth Global Synergy Conference and The UN Summit of the Future, the UN report on strategies for maximizing synergies between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The 2024 Global Report on Climate and SDG Synergy: 'Synergy Solutions for Climate and SDG Action: Bridging the Ambition Gap for the Future We Want') was published in July 2024 for these two events. It emphasizes that by working simultaneously to address climate change and the SDGs, it is possible to have a ripple effect and close the multi-trillion dollar investment gap.
The report cites a lack of political will, deeply ingrained divisions in the global system, and a state of complacency that has become accustomed to inaction as the reasons for impeding progress, and that if this situation continues, it will not be able to meet the problems of the 21st century.
Radical change requires synergies between climate action and sustainable development so that countries can commit to global goals while also addressing their own challenges in a fair, equitable, and inclusive way.
To achieve this, the report emphasizes the importance of avoiding top-down approaches, eliminating silos, utilizing experts, and constantly updating data and knowledge.
