In the World Population Prospects 2022 released by the United Nations on July 11, World Population Day, it was predicted that China's population would begin to decline in 2022. Statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China on January 17 confirmed that the population has declined in 2022, falling 850,000 people from 2021 to 1.412 billion.

Currently, India and China account for roughly the same percentage of the world's population, each accounting for 17.8% of the total. India's population is expected to overtake China's by the end of this year, as its population continues to grow reaching 1.694 billion by 2064.

The world population, which surpassed 8 billion in 2022, is projected to peak at about 10.4 billion in the 2080s and remain at that level through 2100. Note that India will account for about 14.8% of the world's population in 2100, while China will account for about 7.4% of the total.
