The Workshop "Effects of Climate Change and the Spread of COVID-19 on Food Supply and Demand: Food Security under Uncertainty” is the final event organized by JIRCAS this year.

Many researchers have been analyzing the impact of climate change and COVID-19 on food production using various models.
In this workshop, we will share knowledge on the analysis of agricultural production and markets under climate change and the pandemic, and discuss food security and climate change preparedness.
Everyone who is interested in the impact on agricultural markets is welcome to attend.

The development of BNI-enriched wheat with a 40% nitrification inhibition rate will lead to a 9.5% reduction in greenhouse gases from wheat production worldwide.

● Report on the 15th TARF Online Open House
The JIRCAS Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) held the 15th Open House for a week from November 8 (Mon) to 14 (Sun), 2021, to introduce the research activities of TARF to the citizens of Ishigaki City and the general public. As it was the first time for the event to be held online, we devised the contents of the exhibition and introduction so that everyone could enjoy it, and the entire event received a total of 2,765 accesses from Japan and overseas. ● Symposium “Fruits and Vegetables – Research and Action Opportunities for Human and Planetary Health” Held Online
The Symposium “Fruits and Vegetables - Research and Opportunities for Human and Planetary Health” was successfully held online on December 6, 2021 as an official side event of the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit 2021.

■ New Technology and Research Results from JIRCAS

The Tokyo Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit 2021 was held on December 7 and 8.
This issue introduces the results of JIRCAS research on nutritious crops and foods.

● Variety selection for improving cowpea production under multi-environmental conditions in the Sudan Savanna
Cowpea is a legume crop widely grown in Sudan Savanna but yields vary widely from place to place and year to year even within a small area.
By classifying growing environments according to soil type and rainfall, and selecting varieties with stable yield, efficient breeding and variety utilization can be achieved.

● Genetic and phenotypic variation of agronomic traits and salt tolerance among quinoa inbred lines
We have generated a collection of quinoa inbreds lines and clarified their diversity by analyzing their genotype-phenotype relationships.
This will be used to improve the efficiency of breeding at the molecular level based on inbred lines and to elucidate the high environmental adaptability and excellent nutritional characteristics of quinoa.

● Cost accounting for evaluating liquefaction of Thai fermented rice noodles and its prevention focusing on pH management
Liquefaction of Thai fermented rice noodles causes a significant decrease in revenue and business instability for small fermented rice noodle companies.
By measuring pH during the production process and washing the noodles with acid water after boiling, liquefaction can be suppressed to secure product shelf life in the market and profitability.
