■ New Technologies and Research Outputs

JIRCAS has established the International Information Center for Strategy “MeadRI” and launched a website to disseminate information on basic agricultural technologies that can be shared in the Asia-Monsoon region.

In this issue, we will introduce new technologies and research results from JIRCAS targeting the Asia-Monsoon region.

● Multiple drainage can cancel out the enhancement of methane emission by biogas effluent application in a rice paddy
In the Mekong Delta in Vietnam with three rice-cropping seasons, combining multiple drainage with biogas effluent application can reduce methane emissions by 11-13% without reducing yield.

● Water requirement of ratoon rice is larger in the early growth stage and smaller in the late growth stage compared to transplanted rice
Ratoon rice cropping does not require seedling cultivation, tillering and transplanting, shorten the growing period, and reduce irrigation water as compared to main rice cropping. This study clarified the water consumption at various stages of growth to develop an efficient irrigation scheduling for ratoon rice cropping.

● Calculation of rice farmers’ premiums for index-based flood insurance
A method to calculate insurance payments and premiums according to rainfall, risk aversion rate, and changes in price of rice was developed to stabilize the management of rice farmers in the coastal areas of Myanmar, a country prone to weather-related disasters.
