The United Nations has designated 2021 as the International Year of
Fruits and Vegetables.
We are pleased to announce that the Symposium, "Fruits and Vegetables–
Research and Action Opportunities for Human and Planetary Health" will
be held online on December 6 (Mon), as an official side event of the
Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit (N4G) 2021.
Join us to learn about the latest research on the nutritional and health
benefits of fruits and vegetables.

■ New Technology and Research Results from JIRCAS
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Phosphorus is essential for the growth of crops.
In this issue, we would like to introduce three research projects on
phosphorus being conducted in West Africa and Madagascar.

● Direct application frequency of phosphate rock for optimal rainfed
rice cultivation in West Africa
The effect of direct application of low-grade phosphate on West African
rice crops was significantly different among agroecological zones in the
first year.
In all agroecological zones, residual effects of phosphate applied in
the previous year were expected, and the optimal application frequency
differed depending on the size of the zone.

● Effect of rhizosphere soil addition on available phosphorus content in
phosphate rock-enriched compost
When rhizosphere soil was added to sorghum residue composted with
phosphate from Burkina Faso, the number of microorganisms and enzymes
that solubilize phosphate in the compost increased compared to the case
without the addition of rhizosphere soil.
Furthermore, the effective form of phosphorus content in the ripe
compost tended to be higher with the addition of rhizosphere soil.

● Dipping rice seedlings in phosphorus (P)-enriched slurry at
transplanting increases yield and avoids cold stress under P-deficient
soils in the tropics
The phosphorus immersion treatment, in which a small amount of
phosphorus fertilizer is added to the roots of the seedlings before
transplanting the rice plants, is highly effective in fertilizing soils
with high phosphorus adsorption capacity that are widely distributed in
the tropics.
As a result, the number of growing days is shorter than with
conventional fertilization methods, and this is expected to be effective
in improving poor ripening in cultivation environments where
temperatures drop in the latter half of the growing season.
