JIRCAS is working with Chiang Mai Field Crops Research Center of DOA, Thailand for NIAS (National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences) Genebank project. Consigned by JIRCAS, the center conducts tropic soybean seed multiplication in its experimental field in Chiang Mai. On August 13, 2014, we visited the center to collect information about current situation of soybean production in Thailand. Mr. Sutad Pintasen, Director of Chiang Mai Field Crops Research Center told us that among the main research crops of the center, such as soybean, maize, peanut and sesame, soybean has the highest priority and many of researchers in the center involve soybean researches including high-quality seed multiplication and its distribution. Soybean is an important crop for hill tribes such as Shan and Laos, who mainly live in the border areas of northern Thailand. Over the years, the center continues to work on the development of soybean varieties which can adapt to high latitude areas. The center also emphasizes high-yield, early maturity, high protein and large seed size in its soybean breeding programs. Soybean productions in Thailand can be categorized into four types: 1) upland production (mainly crop rotation with maize), 2) secondary crop after lowland rice production, 3) traditional edamame production (for domestic consumption), and 4) edamame production as contract farming (for export). Soybean production in Thailand competes with maize production. Due to the profitability, farmers have a trend to change their crops from soybean to maize in recent years, which results in the reduction of soybean cultivation areas. In order to encourage consumption of soybean, the center has been developing various processed foods which use soybean as their ingredient (raw materials), such as French fried-style nugget made of soy flour and roasted bean seasoned with soy sauce.
