1134. COP29 Goals and Initiatives

The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024. At COP, which is the supreme decision-making body of the UNFCCC, the implementation of the Paris Agreement, which set the 1.5°C target agreed upon at COP21 in 2015, will be reviewed. New goals and initiatives will also be discussed.

At COP29, various initiatives to finance climate change mitigation will be discussed.

One of these initiatives is Methane Reduction from Organic Waste.

In recent years, the acceleration of methane emissions has become a significant concern, with methane from waste and food systems being identified as key contributors to the rapid increase in emissions. To reduce methane emissions, it is essential to identify emission sources and track progress in reduction efforts.

Thanks to the recent satellite data revolution, there is now open, reliable, and practical data available to monitor methane emissions. For example, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) operates the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), which uses satellite data to monitor and report on methane emissions.

At COP29, there are plans to reach an agreement on setting quantitative targets for methane reduction from waste and food systems, in line with the 1.5°C target outlined in climate policy documents. The goal is to streamline commitments in the waste sector and improve efficiency in these efforts.
