860. Upcoming Seminar Next Week: “Millets - How to unlock their potentials to address nutritional, agricultural, and climate challenges"

JIRCAS is organizing a seminar entitled “Millets - How to unlock their potentials to address nutritional, agricultural, and climate challenge” on the occasion of the International Year of Millets 2023.

Minor grains, including millet, foxtail millet, and proso millet, exhibit remarkable drought tolerance compared to major cereals such as rice, wheat, and maize. They thrive in arid and semi-arid regions without the need for extensive irrigation. Often referred to as “nutri-cereals”, millets  have high nutritional value, including increased levels of vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, and resistant starch (indigestible starch). Because of their adaptability and nutritional richness, millets have the potential to contribute significantly to global food security and alleviate hunger. However, research efforts have focused primarily on major grains, leaving the potential of millets underexplored.

To highlight the climate resilience and nutritional importance of millets, the United Nations has designated 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYM2023), advocating for diverse and sustainable diets through increased production and consumption of minor grains.

During this seminar, local and international researchers will discuss the latest advances in millets research and their potential applications. The goal is to increase understanding of millets as a key solution to climate change and nutritional challenges.

The seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, September 26, 2023, just one week from now. It will be held at the Hibikoku Conference Square and will be accessible both in person and online. We encourage you to attend this enlightening event.
