435. JIRCAS-CCFS Society Workshop “Effects of Climate Change and the Spread of COVID-19 on Food Supply and Demand: Food Security under Uncertainty”

Related Research Program
Information

The global average temperature has risen by about 1.2°C compared to the pre-industrial period of the mid-18th century, and has increased rapidly especially since around 1980. In May 2021, the World Meteorological Organization pointed out that the annual average air temperature will increase by more than 1.5°C above the Industrial Revolution era in the next five years, which means that the air temperature will reach the minimum target of the Paris Agreement. Such a surge in the air temperature could lead to more frequent extreme weather events and will have profound effects on food and nutrition security.

Many researchers have analyzed using various models how climate change associated with rising greenhouse gas concentrations will impact agricultural production. Each research study is important and has contributed to policy making mainly related to climate change adaption. However, there are very few studies on the cost that will be incurred by farmers who adopt adaptation technologies and the effects of climate change on nutrition intake.

Therefore, we would like to share the results of our team’s findings with audiences who are interested in the effects of climate change on the agricultural sector focusing on the cost of adaptation to climate change and the impacts of climate change on the agricultural markets. Furthermore, we will give a report on the effects of the spread of COVID-19, which has been a major issue since last year, on future food supply.

Through this workshop, we hope to deepen our understanding of agricultural production and market analyses under climate change and uncertain events such as the spread of COVID-19, as well as raise awareness on food security and climate change mitigation measures.
