Enhancing Productivity and Sustainability in Tropical Fisheries and Aquaculture【Tropical Fisheries Systems】
2026-10-08
Background
Aquaculture has expanded rapidly in Southeast Asia and plays an important role in food supply and income generation. To ensure stable livelihoods for aquaculture producers, continuous improvements are needed in seed production technologies and cost-effective production systems. At the same time, diversification of cultured species, value addition, and improved distribution systems are necessary to strengthen industry resilience. In coastal and brackish-water fisheries, declining fishery resources have become a growing concern, creating an urgent need for management approaches that balance productivity with sustainable resource use.
Objectives
This project develops and refines seed production technologies for existing and emerging aquaculture species in Southeast Asia and shares these technologies with partner countries and regions. It also explores value-added products and improved marketing systems that enhance income opportunities while proposing resource management approaches for small-scale brackish-water fisheries that promote both sustainable resource use and stable livelihoods.
Research Themes
- Development and improvement of technologies to enhance productivity in tropical aquaculture
- Management, production, and distribution systems for the sustainable utilization of fishery resources in Batan Bay waters
