The 16th Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers (Japan Award 2022) is now accepting application.
Young foreign researchers who have made outstanding achievements in research and development related to agriculture, forestry and fisheries in developing regions are eligible to apply.
The awardees will receive a certificate of commendation and an incentive of US$5,000, and will be invited to Japan to attend the awarding ceremony to be held in autumn.

● Social Implementation of the Asian Monsoon Plant Factory System
The Achievement Briefing Meeting on Asian Monsoon Plant Factory System (AMPFS) Follow-up Activities was held on December 9, 2021.
A working group for the social implementation of the plant factory system was formed in collaboration with private companies to support the promotion of the AMPFS in Southeast Asia and other regions.

● Dr. MATSUMOTO Yukio Receives the Iwate Prefecture Governor's Award
Dr. MATSUMOTO Yukio, Researcher in the Fisheries Division, received the best paper award for research on Sanriku coast by Iwate Prefecture for his research on “Fenton reaction as a possible stimulus to induce spawning in Ezo abalone Haliotis discus hannai during stormy weather”.

● Auditor ISODA Hiroko (Part-time) Receives the 17th JICA President Award
Dr. ISODA Hiroko, part-time auditor at JIRCAS and currently Professor at the Alliance for Research on the Mediterranean and North Africa (ARENA), University of Tsukuba, received the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Award in recognition of her longtime contribution to JICA projects in the North African region.

■ New Technology and Research Results from JIRCAS

The year 2021 raised awareness on food security and nutrition at the UN Food Systems Summit and the Nutrition for Growth Summit.
In 2022, the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8) is scheduled to be held in Tunisia.
In this issue, we would like to introduce four examples of research conducted by JIRCAS in Africa.

● A behavior-predictive model based on thermoregulatory behavior of the desert locust in Africa
The desert locust, one of the world’s most destructive insect pests, migrate in large number in the Sahara Desert during the day and behave according to fluctuating thermal condition to regulate body temperatures. Using a biophysical model that incorporates the relationship between obtained body temperature and activity at a remote site, it is possible to estimate body temperature of desert locust from available weather information and predict their behavior.

● Providing information on collaborative behaviors is important for communal forest management in Ethiopia
Farmers in the Tigray region of Ethiopia are engaged in cooperative actions to conserve and use the common lands of the Ethiopian plateau.
In order to sustain communal forest management, this study is aimed at providing information on the importance of collaboration in conservation activities using an economic experiment approach.

● Feeding of fermented TMR prepared with local feed resources improves milk production and profitability in Mozambique
High quality fermented total mixed ration (TMR) can be prepared by utilizing the feed resources available in southern Mozambique.
Feeding fermented TMR can improve the forage and digestibility of Jersey dairy cattle as compared to conventional feeding practices, thereby increasing milk production and profitability.

● An integrated crop-livestock farm management model that can meet the reproductive conditions of dairy cattle in Mozambique
We have unravelled the major constraints to sustainable dairy cattle farming by small-scale farmers in Mozambique, and developed an integrated crop-livestock management model.
The model can be used to support farmers’ decision-making for the establishment of dairy cattle farming, promotion of livestock farming cooperation, and improve the income of farmers through crop-dairy interactions.

● JARQ Special Issue - Disseminating Information on the Scientific Contributions of Japanese Researchers to CGIAR
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the CGIAR in 2021, we have compiled the scientific contributions and major achievements of Japanese researchers at the 15 CGIAR institutes into a special issue of the Japan Agricultural Research Quarterly (JARQ) and published it on the JIRCAS website.
