On December 6, 2021, JIRCAS, in collaboration with the FAO Liaison Office in Japan, held a successful online symposium on "Fruits and Vegetables – Research and Action Opportunities for Human and Planetary Health”. The symposium introduced the research potential and advanced technologies for fruits and vegetables to contribute to health, development, and the environment. It also highlighted the gaps that exist in the world, particularly in developing regions, and discussed the challenges and areas where research and policy interventions are needed. 438. Intensification for Sustainable Rice Cultivation
Rice is the staple food of half the world's population, accounting for 21% of caloric intake. Its consumption is expected to continue to increase in the future. The research paper reported in Nature Communications assesses yield gap and the resource-use efficiency in 32 rice cropping systems covering half of the world's rice area to ensure adequate rice supplies worldwide in the coming decades, while minimizing negative environmental impacts.

437. Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit (N4G): Tokyo Nutrition Declaration and Action Plan
The Tokyo Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit 2021 was held under the auspices of the Japanese Government on December 7 and 8, 2021, and the “Tokyo Compact on Global Nutrition for Growth” was issued as the outcome document. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has also issued the “Specific Action Plans for Implementing N4G Compact by Japan's Food Stakeholders”.

436. Uncertainty and Food Security
The timing of the report on the Omicron mutant strain, which comes two years after the new coronavirus infection was first reported in November 2019, has the world focused on the impact of its infectious and virulent nature on economic recovery. The IMF blog points out that this uncertainty, along with the recent spike in fuel and food prices, has left some countries with the difficult task of navigating economic recovery and controlling inflationary pressures. In a workshop to be held online on December 17, up-and-coming researchers will discuss food security under uncertainty. Please register and join us.

Increasing temperatures due to climate change will lead to an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events, which may have a tremendous impact on food and nutrition security. On December 17, a workshop on “Effects of Climate Change and the Spread of COVID-19 on Food Supply and Demand: Food Security under Uncertainty” will be held online under the auspices of JIRCAS and the CCFS Society. The workshop will share knowledge on the analysis of agricultural production and markets under climate change and the spread of COVID-19, and discuss food security and climate change preparedness.

The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) has identified fruits and vegetables as a healthy source of nutrition that should be consumed. On the occasion of the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit 2021, a symposium will be held online on Monday, December 6, co-hosted by JIRCAS and the FAO Liaison Office in Japan, and supported by the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO). 431. MAFF Side Event at the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit 2021
As the host country of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Government of Japan will host the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit on December 7-8, 2021 to promote international efforts to solve malnutrition. In conjunction with this summit, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will hold a side event to introduce and disseminate Japan's efforts to the world. JIRCAS will participate in 2 sessions of the MAFF side event, Thematic Session 2 “Towards Sustainable Solutions for Nutrition Issues through Food - Food is Local, Wisdom is Global” and the Presentation Session by Stakeholders.

430. World Soil Day "Halt soil salinization, boost soil productivity"
This Sunday, December 5, is World Soil Day (WDS), which this year will be held under the theme of "Halt soil salinization, boost soil productivity”. In the "Sustainable Land Management in Drylands" Project, which started in April 2021, we are focusing on Indo Gangetic basin in India where irrigation-induced salinization is sever. And we are trying to develop countermeasures against salinization by low-cost irrigation and drainage technology which farmers can work on as part of farming activities.

429. Resilience of the Food System Through Diversification
Diversification of production in the food system at the field, farm household, and market levels has the potential to improve the resilience of the food systems to shocks such as climate change, extreme weather events, and market disruptions, according to a recent article published in Nature Food. A recently published article in Nature Food argues that the relationship between food system diversification and resilience depends not only on the local natural environment, but also on the socioeconomic and cultural conditions that define existing agricultural systems, and that trade-offs need to be analyzed. In the symposium to be held online on December 6, we will discuss fruits and vegetables, which are essential for building a sustainable food system for humanity and the planet. 428. Global Nutrition Report 2021: N4G and the New Nutrition Accountability Framework
The Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit (N4G) will be held on December 7 and 8, 2021. Prior to this, the 2021 Global Nutrition Report was published on November 23, 2021. This year's report shows that progress in improving nutrition is extremely slow. Our current diet is a major threat to our health and the planet, but it has not improved in the past decade. For example, intake of fruits and vegetables is about half of the recommended amount. On the eve of the Tokyo N4G, JIRCAS, in collaboration with the FAO Liaison Office in Japan and supported by the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), will host the Symposium "Fruits and Vegetables– Research and Action Opportunities for Human and Planetary Health”, as an official N4G side event. 426. Building Agrifood Systems Resilient to Shocks and Stresses
Shocks and stresses such as the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change/extreme events, conflicts, and chronic hunger and malnutrition are threatening the stability of the agrifood system. On November 23, 2021, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization released the 2021 State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) report stressing the need to build agrifood systems that are more resilient to shocks and stresses.

425. On Urbanization and Agrobiodiversity
Today, more than 50% of humanity lives in urban areas, and this figure is projected to reach 68% by 2050. Urbanization is a multifaceted process that brings about demographic, biophysical, economic, cultural, and social changes at the global level. A paper recently published in One Earth showed that urbanization is not necessarily a trade-off for agrobiodiversity. For example, with regard to urban and suburban land use, there are approaches that can provide a variety of food products, such as vegetable gardens, orchards and dairy, that contribute to maintaining food and nutritional diversity.

424. Highest World Food Prices Since July 2011
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) released the World Food Price Index on November 4, 2021, reporting that world food prices are at their highest level since July 2011 due to tight stockpile levels. In order to maintain global food security, it is essential to collect and analyze information on short, medium and long-term trends that may lead to imbalances in food supply and demand in the global food system, which is very closely connected, and to be prepared for international cooperation.

423. Advancement of tropical crop genetic resources utilization through the development of database, technologies and research networking (Tropical crop genetic resources)
The JIRCAS “Tropical crop genetic resources” project is promoting the development of strategic genetic resources information, breeding technologies, varieties and materials, and cultivation and dissemination technologies based on the problems and research needs of each crop in Japan and overseas, taking advantage of the diverse and abundant genetic resources of tropical crops and the geographical advantage of the subtropical island research facility. In addition, by sharing and providing information and technologies, we aim to strengthen collaboration that will lead to the formation of networks with domestic and overseas research institutions for the advancement of tropical crop genetic resource utilization.

The Asia monsoon region covers the economies of East, Southeast and Southern Asia, and is estimated to account for more than 50% of the world's population. Given the importance of the Asian monsoon region to the global economy, it is important for Japan and the international community to build on the successes of sustainable food system transformation in this region.
