1184. Building Resilience in a Changing Climate

Planning to adapt to the growing impacts of climate change is essential. Regardless of whether you are a developed or developing country, the threat of rising temperatures and extreme weather events is a real reality around the world. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), between 1970 and 2021, extreme weather, climate, and water-related events resulted in 11,778 reported disasters worldwide, resulting in more than 2 million deaths and an estimated USD 4.3 trillion in economic losses. We recognize the need to build climate-resilient societies that enable sustainable, low-inflation growth in order to protect lives, livelihoods, and economies.

In light of the above, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) emphasizes the urgency of National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).

The NAP serves as an important roadmap for building climate resilience and achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA). The NAP outlines activities that address adaptation needs at all levels, including adaptation finance, from local to national to regional. Adaptive investments at the right scale are expected to be transformative, not only by protecting people and economies, but also by promoting more opportunity, equality, and prosperity.

Many countries need to submit NAPs by 2025 to quantify their needs and drive adaptation across all sectors. Effective adaptation requires the involvement of world leaders, as well as the expertise and resources of philanthropic organizations, nonprofits, academia, and the private sector.
