1047. Globally, 80% of people support stronger climate action
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), together with the University of Oxford and GeoPoll, conducted the Peoples' Climate Vote 2024, the largest survey on climate change ever conducted, covering 77 countries, 87 languages, and 73,000 people.
The results showed that 80% of respondents, or 4 out of 5, agreed with the call for stronger government action on the climate crisis, and 86% said that governments should overcome geopolitical challenges and join international efforts to tackle climate change.
The survey results also revealed strong support for climate action among the top 20 emitters of greenhouse gases. Approval among respondents was 66% in the United States and Russia, 67% in Germany, 73% in China, 77% in South Africa and India, 85% in Brazil, 88% in Iran, and 93% in Italy. For Japan, the approval rate was 74%.
In the five high-emission countries (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United States), women were 10–17% more likely than men to support increased government measures.
Given the unprecedented scale of the survey and the inclusion of social groups that have not previously been included in climate change surveys, support for government efforts to strengthen measures for the Paris Agreement will provide a boost for actual policy implementation.
