Dr. MATSUMOTO Yukio Receives the Iwate Prefecture Governor's Award

On December 22, 2021, Dr. MATSUMOTO Yukio, Researcher in the Fisheries Division, received the best paper award for research on Sanriku coast by Iwate Prefecture for his research on “Fenton reaction as a possible stimulus to induce spawning in Ezo abalone Haliotis discus hannai during stormy weather”.

'Development of BNI-enhanced Wheat' Selected in Top 10 Agricultural Technology News for 2021

On December 23, 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) announced the selection of the “Top 10 News on Agricultural Technology for 2021”. Among them, the JIRCAS research results on the “Development of biological nitrification inhibition (BNI)-enhanced wheat that shows high productivity even with less amount of nitrogen fertilizer” was selected as Topic 7.

461. Improving Global and Human Health via Dietary Changes in High-income Countries

A paper published in Nature Food in January 2022 pointed out that a bold shift from animal-based foods to plant-based foods in high-income countries could simultaneously achieve multiple climate change and environmental conservation goals. On the other hand, if it is not realistic in the short term to achieve a rapid dietary shift even in high-income countries, changing the mindset of individual consumers and gradually taking action seems to be effective enough.

460. The 16th Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers (Japan Award 2022)

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and JIRCAS have been presenting the Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers (Japan Award) since 2007 to young foreign researchers who have achieved outstanding research results that will lead to future technological innovations, with the aim of further motivating young researchers to contribute to research and development on agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related industries in developing regions.     “Global Renewables Outlook: Energy Transformation 2050”, formerly known as “Global Energy Transformation: a roadmap to 2050”, was published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in April 2020. This comprehensive analysis outlines the investments and technologies needed to decarbonize the energy system in line with the Paris Agreement. It also explores deeper decarbonization options for the hardest sectors, aiming to eventually cut CO2 emissions to zero.

    The World Agroforestry (ICRAF) published a book entitled “Climate-Smart Agriculture: Enhancing Resilient Agricultural Systems, Landscapes, and Livelihoods in Ethiopia and Beyond” with the aim of compiling climate-smart technologies and practices towards achieving increased productivity and enhanced resilience to climate change, and to provide guidance for academic, policy, research, outreach and development stakeholders in applying climate-smart technologies.
