From March 11 to 14, 2025 (Tuesday to Friday), JIRCAS exhibited its biomass energy research activities and achievements at the Green Food System EXPO, held at Tokyo Big Sight and hosted by the Japan Management Association. This event served as an exhibition promoting food value chains and sustainable environments.
JIRCAS has been conducting research and technological development to utilize unused biomass waste, such as by-products from the oil palm industry in Southeast Asia. At this EXPO, JIRCAS showcased achievements from the following projects:

The “Carbon Recycling” project (full title: Development of carbon recycling technologies to address global issues caused by agricultural waste)
The SATREPS project on “Sustainable Replantation of Oil Palm by Adding Value to Oil Palm trunk through Scientific and Technological Innovation,” and
The fiscal year 2024 BRIDGE program, “Research for global deployment of next-generation biomass upcycling technologies."

Additionally, IHI Corporation, which is conducting joint research with JIRCAS under SATREPS, also exhibited at the event.

JIRCAS is working with numerous partner organizations and companies to develop and implement next-generation environmental technologies that contribute to decarbonization by utilizing raw material diversification and microbial saccharification technologies to upcycle discarded biomass.

Over four days, the event attracted 72,151 visitors (including those attending concurrent exhibitions). The JIRCAS exhibition booth experienced unprecedented popularity, welcoming numerous attendees from companies, municipalities, and research institutions. Interest in biomass energy research continues to grow year by year, and the booth facilitated active discussions and consultations on the introduction of specific technologies. Encouraged by this enthusiastic response, JIRCAS will continue to contribute to the realization of a low-carbon society through the development and implementation of technologies that achieve zero-emission energy and material supply using unused biomass.
