From November 24 (Wed.) to 26 (Fri.), 2021, JIRCAS presented an exhibit of research activities and results on biomass energy at Agro Innovation 2021 (organized by Japan Management Association), which was held at the Aomi Exhibition Halls of Tokyo Big Sight. The event is a specialized exhibition that showcases cutting-edge technologies and products related to the entire value chain of Japan's agricultural business. In the exhibition hall, thorough countermeasures against the new coronavirus were taken, such as taking temperature, wearing masks, and disinfecting.

The JIRCAS exhibit consisted mainly the results of its research on microbial saccharification technology using unused biomass discharged from the oil palm industry in Southeast Asia. IHI Corporation, which is conducting joint research with JIRCAS under the SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) project "Sustainable Replantation of Oil Palm by Adding Value to Oil Palm Trunk through Scientific and Technological Innovation," also participated in the exhibition.

On November 26 (Fri.), at the Biomass Expo Forum under the theme  "Next Generation Business Plans Utilizing Abundant Local Biomass Resources", Project Leader KOSUGI Akihiko (Biological Resources and Post-harvest Division) gave a lecture on "Local environmental conservation and Japan's international contribution through stable procurement and utilization technology of tropical biomass resources in Southeast Asia," which was attended by more than 100 people.

The number of visitors to the event was 6,430 over the three days. Although the number of visitors increased slightly from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of visitors to the JIRCAS booth was as large as in previous years. In particular, there was a lot of interest and inquiries about the microbial saccharification technology conducted by JIRCAS and the highly efficient biogas production by the anaerobic wastewater treatment system (IC reactor) conducted by IHI Corporation.
