JIRCAS has successfully completed the SATREPS Project on establishment of the model for fertilizing cultivation promotion using Burkina Faso phosphate rock as of April 2023.
In this project, extensive research was conducted on how to use the underutilized low-grade phosphate rock, which is abundant in Africa, as a fertilizer. Four technical manuals summarizing the results of the research have been published, and a ceremony was held on March 10, 2023 to hand over the manuals to the relevant local organizations. The technical manuals consist of English and French versions, respectively.
- Manual for National Fertilizer Production
- Research Highlights for application technique of national fertilizer produced from Burkina phosphate rock
- Technical handbook for the direct application of Burkina Faso phosphate rock
- A strategy for promoting fertilizing cultivation in Burkina Faso by evaluating multi-functional effects
The National Institute of Environment and Agricultural Research (INERA), a joint research institute, will hold briefings on these technical manuals for relevant organizations that are expected to use them. In addition, JICA, together with the Ministry of Agriculture of Burkina Faso, is preparing activities for the social implementation of some of these research results. We hope that the technical manuals will be used and contribute to the development of agriculture in Burkina Faso in the future.
Although the activities of SATREPS Burkina Faso have been completed, JIRCAS is working on the development of a crop management technology using calcined phosphorus derived from phosphate rock under the “Africa upland farming system" project funded by JIRCAS operational grants.
