Dr. Nguyen Huy Chung, Head of Pathology & Phyto-Immunology Department, Plant Protection Research Institute (PPRI), Vietnam, and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tho, Researcher from the same institute, visited JIRCAS from August to September 2022. JIRCAS is collaborating with the PPRI on the "Development of environment-friendly management system against transboundary plant pests based on ecological characteristics (Transboundary pest management)". During this visit, the participants received technical training on research methods using natural enemies of rice planthoppers, which is necessary for the progress of the joint research. From August 25 to 26, they also visited the NARO Institute for Plant Protection (Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture), where they received a lecture on research methods using rice planthoppers as materials.

Rice planthoppers are permanent pests in Southeast Asia, and the development of insecticide resistance has become a major problem. Populations of the species originate in central and northern Vietnam and then fly to Japan via China, so it is important to manage and understand the development of insecticide resistance in this region for sustainable control rice plant hopper in Japan. JIRCAS will continue to strengthen its collaboration with PPRI and NARO Institute for Plant Protection to establish sustainable control technology for rice planthoppers in Vietnam.
