On Thursday, May 30, 2024, 37 first-year students and 2 teachers from Tokyo Metropolitan High School of Science and Technology visited the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) as part of their SSH (Super Science High Schools) overnight study program.
The visit began with an overview of JIRCAS's research programs and its contributions to the SDGs, followed by a discussion with the students on food and environmental issues in developing regions.
Next, Project Leader KOBORI Youichi of the Crop, Livestock and Environment Division introduced transboundary pests, which are a global problem. By observing the ecology of lesser-known insects and real examples of rice planthoppers, the students gained a deeper understanding of the topic. During a group presentation on the theme of "Why do pests occur?", a variety of opinions were expressed on reproductive capacity, pesticide resistance, and genetic diversity, showcasing the students' high level of critical thinking.
After the lecture, several students asked individual questions, indicating a keen interest in agricultural and pest-related issues in developing regions. It is hoped that their learning experience in scientific and technological fields will contribute to the development of global human resources in the future.
