On November 11 and 12, 2024 (Mon and Tue), two classes comprising 77 second-year students from the science and math program of Okinawa Prefectural Kyuyo High School visited JIRCAS as part of their study trip to Tokyo and Tsukuba.
The students were introduced to the research and development activities carried out by JIRCAS in collaboration with partner institutions aimed at solving global food and environmental problems. They also explored why JIRCAS is addressing issues in developing regions. Additionally, they engaged in discussions on how agricultural research contributes to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with lively exchanges of unique ideas within their groups.
Next, Dr. KOBORI Yoichi (Project Leader, Crop, Livestock and Environment Division), gave a lecture on transboundary pest research, the appeal of insect research, practical examples of research outcomes, and how to work as a specialist in these fields. During the lecture, students formed hypotheses on the topic "Why can't we completely prevent crop damage from pests even with pest control?" and discussed methods to verify these hypotheses. Each group's presentation included sharp insights that even surprised Dr. Kobori by anticipating aspects of the lecture content.
The students showed great interest in research, technological development, and international contributions, leading to an active exchange of ideas during the Q&A session. JIRCAS hopes to continue offering such opportunities through school visits, in order to foster a global perspective and interest in science, technology, and innovation among the younger generation.
