  • Overview of the “United in Science - High-level synthesis report of latest climate science information” released by the Science Advisory Group of the UN Climate Action Summit 2019

    The world's top organizations on climate change research, including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have jointly released a report entitled “United in Science - High-level synthesis report of latest climate science information” in line with the UN Climate Change Summit held in New York on September 23, 2019.
  • Digitalisation of African Agriculture (D4Ag) Report of the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation

    The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) has published the Digitalisation of African Agriculture (D4Ag) 2018-2019 Report, summarizing the current state of digital agricultural transformation to meet food and nutrition security while responding to climate change. The report focused on how far the D4Ag has advanced as of 2019, providing perspectives on where it will go in the next 3–5 years, and clarifying what it will take to maximize its potential and explore the roles of different stakeholders for agricultural transformation that can feed Africa.
  • International organization Global Commission on Adaptation calls for urgent action on climate resilience

    The Global Commission on Adaptation released a report “Adapt Now: A Global Call for Leadership on Climate Resilience”, urging governments and businesses to take immediate action in dealing with the impacts of climate. Adoption of appropriate adaptation measures can lead to a “triple dividend” through avoiding future losses, generating economic benefits through innovation, and providing social and environmental benefits.

    The Thai Science and Technology Fair is the largest fair of the year in Thailand featuring advances in science and technology. The 2019 fair under the concept of “Science, Technology and Innovation: Inspiring Creativity for Better Living and Sustainability for the Nation” was held at the Impact Exhibition and Convention Center in the province of Nonthaburi from August 16-25, 2019.
  • International organization IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land

    The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group of scientists assessing the state of scientific knowledge related to climate change, has released a Special Report on Climate Change and Land (SRCCL) summarizing the impact of climate change on desertification, land degradation, sustainable land management, food security, and greenhouse emissions in terrestrial ecosystems, on August 8, 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • International organization FAO 2019 Report: The State of Food Security in the World

    The Food and Agriculture Organization released the 2019 edition of the “State of Food Security in the World” providing an overview of food insecurity, hunger and malnutrition at the global and regional levels. Among the major highlights, it is estimated that more than 820 million people in the world were still hungry in 2018 underscoring the immense challenge of achieving the SDG of Zero Hunger by 2030.
  • International organization An Overview of the United Nations 2019 Revision of World Population Prospects

    The 2019 Revision of World Population Prospects has been released by the United Nations Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat providing projections of population growth, demographic estimates, and associated population indicators such as number of births per woman, aging population, proportion of active workers etc. The population is expected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030 (10% increase), 9.7 billion in 2050 (26%), and 10.9 billion in 2100 (42%) from 7.7 million in 2019.
  • International organization Overview of IRENA report on sugarcane bioenergy in Southern Africa

    The International Renewable Agency (IRENA), an intergovernmental organization that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, has published a study on the bioenergy potential from sugarcane and associated development costs in seven sugar-producing countries in the Southern Africa focusing on economic potential in expanding bioenergy production and reducing price of fuel and electricity.
  • International organization Summary of the IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

    The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)has published a summary of the Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services for policy makers. The report includes a comprehensive analysis of the impact of economic development over the past 50 years on natural resources and ecosystems and possible scenarios in the coming decades, based on nearly 15,000 references including scientific papers and government information prepared by experts from 50 countries.
  • International organization FSIN Global Report on Food Crises 2019

    The Food Security Information Network (FSIN) released the Global Report on Food Crises 2019. The report focuses on the plight of millions of people suffering from acute hunger and malnutrition. It also points out that conflict, economic shocks, climate change and natural disasters continue to put the lives and livelihoods of large number of people around the world at risk of hunger.
  • International organization Bringing the Concept of Climate-Smart Agriculture to Life: Insights from CSA Country Profiles Across Africa, Asia, and Latin America

    The Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) country Profile Series assesses the status of climate change in the agricultural sectors of more than 30 countries across Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, including the challenges and solutions. The report also provides an overview of climate-smart technologies around the world, emerging insights, strengths and weaknesses across different dimensions of climate-smartness, and their specific barriers to adoption.
  • Meeting Participation at the 26th World Outlook Conference

    The World Outlook Conference for this year was held in Ireland at the Agriculture and Food Development Authority (Teagasc) in suburban Dublin from 8 to 9 June 2017. Dr. Jun Furuya, a senior researcher of the Social Sciences Division, attended the conference on behalf of JIRCAS.
