The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development begins this year, 2021.

The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth, stabilizing climate, storing carbon, producing oxygen and nurturing biodiversity. It supports humankind by providing food, minerals and energy resources, as well as cultural and recreational services.

The Decade of Ocean Science aims to provide a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support countries to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and to strengthen the international cooperation needed to develop the scientific research and innovative technologies that can connect with the needs of society.

JIRCAS is developing technology that span agriculture, forestry and fisheries in developing countries. We are contributing to ocean science in particular through the development of technology for sustainable aquatic production in harmony with tropical ecosystems, and sustainable resource management systems in the water-vulnerable areas of Asia and the Pacific Islands
