1532. World Rural Development Day (6 July): The Power of Rural Communities in Building a Sustainable Future
In September 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 6 July as World Rural Development Day. The observance is intended to reinforce international efforts to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development in rural areas, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) commitment to “leave no one behind.”
According to reports from the United Nations and other international organizations, approximately 80% of the world’s poorest people live in rural areas. Rural communities continue to face numerous challenges, including poverty, food insecurity, limited access to healthcare and education, and persistent digital divides. At the same time, these communities play a vital role in global food systems. Family farmers, in particular, are estimated to produce about 80% of the world’s food, while women, youth, and Indigenous Peoples make indispensable contributions to agricultural production and the social and economic vitality of rural communities.
Rural areas are also on the frontlines of climate change. They are highly vulnerable to droughts, floods, and other extreme weather events, while internet access and digital connectivity remain significantly lower than in urban areas. As a result, many rural populations are unable to fully benefit from the opportunities offered by digital technologies. These overlapping vulnerabilities have long-term consequences for livelihoods, resilience, and sustainable development.
World Rural Development Day is intended to be more than a public awareness campaign. It seeks to encourage governments, businesses, civil society organizations, research institutions, and other stakeholders to work together in promoting greater investment in rural areas, strengthening policy dialogue, and supporting locally led initiatives. The development of rural communities is closely linked to global priorities such as food security, poverty reduction, climate action, and the achievement of a sustainable and inclusive future.
Empowering rural communities means advancing sustainable development for the world as a whole. World Rural Development Day provides an opportunity to recognize this essential role and to inspire concrete actions toward a more resilient and sustainable future.
