1043. The Last 12 Months Have Been the Hottest Year on Record
The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that May 2024 broke the monthly temperature record, making the past 12 months the hottest year on record.
Previously, the longest monthly maximum temperature streak lasted for seven months from 2015 to 2016. However, the current period has significantly exceeded that record. NASA's analysis revealed that the temperature baseline is roughly defined over a 30-year period. Comparing the last 12 months, temperatures have been 1.3°C higher than the 20th century (1951-1980) baseline and 1.5°C above the late 19th century average.
Currently, the El Niño phenomenon has ended, and a transition to a La Niña phenomenon is predicted by the end of the year. The La Niña phenomenon may suppress this year's average annual temperature by cooling the seawater in the tropical Pacific Ocean and may also activate hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean.
