ポイント!

Since the inception of our project, we have embraced agricultural research for the Nansei Islands as a cornerstone mission of our institute, embarking on research through an island project framework. Under the current 5th Medium to Long-term Plan, launched in 2021, we are actively developing technologies to safeguard marine biological resources like coral reefs and mangroves, with a specific emphasis on the efficient utilization of sugar residues derived from sugarcane mills, one of primary crops of the Nansei Islands. We invite you to explore how these sugar residues are processed and harnessed in agricultural production, illustrating their role in nurturing the islands' ecosystem. Witness firsthand how our efforts contribute to the preservation and sustainability of the island environment.

ポイント!

The Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) has diligently gathered and conserved a wealth of genetic resources, including tropical fruit trees, sugarcane, and indica rice, from tropical and subtropical regions across Japan and beyond. Our objective is to create a comprehensive database of these diverse genetic treasures, complete with their agricultural traits, to facilitate their effective utilization by farmers in tropical and subtropical regions, as well as by supporting researchers. We encourage you to examine the genetic resources amassed by our institute from a breeding standpoint. Consider the agricultural characteristics that are meticulously analyzed before these resources reach farmers' hands. Delve into how these research findings are interconnected with the practical utilization of these genetic resources.

ポイント!

The Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) is situated in the subtropical Nansei Islands, where we contend with frequent typhoons and droughts, significantly impacting agricultural output. In the face of these weather challenges, facility cultivation emerges as a effective technology for mitigating agricultural losses. Particularly in the southwestern islands like Ishigaki Island, addressing heat and humidity becomes imperative in facility cultivation. Our ongoing research focuses on the management and techniques required for institutionalized vegetable cultivation, thriving in the high temperatures and humidity characteristic of the tropics and subtropics. Strawberries, notoriously challenging to grow in high temperatures, serve as a prime example. We invite you to explore our research through the lens of necessary environmental adaptations for cultivating temperate vegetables within the Nansei Islands, distinct from mainland Japan. Additionally, we seek to spark discussions on the innovations and endeavors necessary to lower cultivation expenses and enable economically sustainable vegetable cultivation in these regions.
