JIRCAS International Workshop “Small scale oil palm farmers in Southeast Asia - Partnerships for sustainable production” was co-organized by JIRCAS, Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MOAC), Department of Agriculture (DOA), MOAC, Royal Thai Government, and Univanich Palm Oil Public Company Ltd. (Univanich) on February 11-12, 2014 in Krabi, Thailand. Experts from Thailand, Indonesia and Japan attended the workshop. Mr. Kanit Likhitvidhayavuth, Deputy Secretary General, OAE and Mr. Surakitti Srikul, Senior Expert in Crop Production Management in Upper South of Thailand, Office of Agricultural Research and Development, Region 7 Surattani, DOA, gave the welcome addresses. Five invited speakers made their presentations on the current situation of small scale oil palm production in Thailand and Indonesia, and the solutions to support smallholders for sustainable production. In the general discussion, the participants discussed 1) How we can benefit from AEC implementation in 2015, and 2) How we can coexist oil palm development and food security with special attention to the roles of smallholders. On the second day of the workshop, the participants visited sustainable oil palm production site managed by Univanich to obtain the first-hand information. The workshop promoted the information exchange among the researchers, policy planners and entrepreneurs of oil palm production and successfully provided the latest achievements in the field studies and business cases of smallholder supporting programs.
